Word Count, Readability, and Content Metrics
Word Count, Readability, and Content Metrics
Understanding content metrics helps you write better documentation, blog posts, and UI copy. Word count is just the beginning.
Basic Metrics
Word Count
Sounds simple, but edge cases exist: hyphenated words (one or two?), contractions, URLs, code blocks. Most counters split on whitespace and treat each token as a word.
Character Count
With and without spaces. Important for SMS (160 chars), tweets (280 chars), meta descriptions (155 chars), and title tags (60 chars).
Sentence Count
Split on period, exclamation, and question marks. Watch for abbreviations (Dr., U.S.A.) that aren't sentence boundaries.
Paragraph Count
Count blocks of text separated by blank lines.
Reading Time
The standard formula: words ÷ 200-250 WPM = reading time.
Technical content reads slower (~150 WPM). Casual content reads faster (~275 WPM). Medium.com uses 275 WPM.
function readingTime(text, wpm = 230) {
const words = text.trim().split(/\s+/).length;
const minutes = Math.ceil(words / wpm);
return minutes;
}
Readability Scores

Technical docs should aim for 40-60. Blog posts should aim for 60-70.
Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level
Outputs a U.S. school grade level. Target grade 8-10 for general technical writing.
SEO Content Guidelines
Title tags — 50-60 characters for full display in search results. Meta descriptions — 150-160 characters. Include the primary keyword. H1 headings — one per page, under 70 characters. Content length — blog posts targeting search traffic should be 1,500-2,500 words minimum. Keyword density — 1-2% is natural. Higher feels spammy.Try It

Good writing is measurable. Track reading time, aim for appropriate readability scores, and respect character limits for SEO elements. Let metrics guide revision, not first drafts.
