Jest is the most widely used JavaScript testing framework, created by Meta. It provides test running, assertions, mocking, coverage, and snapshot testing out of the box. Vitest is a next-generation testing framework built on Vite. It provides a Jest-compatible API with native ESM support, TypeScript support without configuration, and significantly faster execution.

Key Differences

Speed: Vitest is 2-5x faster than Jest for most test suites thanks to Vite transform pipeline and native ESM. Hot module replacement means only changed tests re-run. For large suites, the difference is dramatic. Configuration: Vitest requires near-zero configuration for modern projects. Jest requires configuring transforms, module mapping, and environment setup. For TypeScript projects, Vitest works immediately. ESM Support: Vitest has native ESM support. Jest experimental ESM still requires flags and configuration. If your project uses ESM, Vitest is significantly easier. API Compatibility: Vitest API is intentionally Jest-compatible. Migration is usually straightforward — primarily renaming jest to vi in mock calls. Ecosystem: Jest has a larger ecosystem of matchers, reporters, and integrations.
