Open Source Funding Landscape 2026
Open-source software powers the entire tech industry, but funding the people who build it remains a challenge. Here is how the funding landscape looks in 2026 and what models are actually working.
GitHub Sponsors and Patreon
Direct sponsorship has grown but remains insufficient for most projects. The top 1% of open-source maintainers earn a living from sponsorships. For everyone else, it is supplemental income. GitHub Sponsors removing the fee for sponsored developers has helped, but the fundamental problem remains: most users of open-source software do not pay anything.
Open Core Model
The open core model — free community edition plus paid enterprise features — has become the dominant commercial open-source strategy. Companies like GitLab, Supabase, and Grafana have built billion-dollar businesses on this model. The key is finding the right split: enough free features to build adoption, enough paid features to generate revenue.
Dual Licensing
Dual licensing (open source for individual use, paid license for commercial use) gained traction after several high-profile license changes. The BSL (Business Source License) used by HashiCorp, MariaDB, and others restricts commercial use for a time period before the code becomes fully open source. This protects against cloud providers offering the software as a service without contributing back.
VC Funding for Open Source
Venture capital investment in open-source companies reached $8 billion in 2025. Developer-focused VCs like Heavybit, Boldstart, and OSS Capital specialize in open-source business models. The investment thesis: build distribution through open source, monetize through enterprise features, support, and managed services.
What Works
The projects that sustain themselves financially share common traits: a clear enterprise buyer, a managed service that removes operational burden, and a community that creates network effects. Projects that are purely developer utilities without an enterprise buyer continue to struggle with funding, regardless of their technical excellence.
