10 DevOps Tools Every Developer Should Know
You do not need to be a DevOps engineer to benefit from these tools. Every developer who ships code should understand them.
1. Docker
Containerization eliminates the "works on my machine" problem. Write a Dockerfile, build an image, and your app runs the same everywhere. Start here if you learn nothing else on this list.
2. Docker Compose
When your app needs a database, cache, and message queue, Compose lets you define all services in one YAML file and start them with a single command.
3. GitHub Actions
CI/CD that lives next to your code. Automate tests, builds, and deployments with YAML workflows. The marketplace has thousands of reusable actions.
4. Terraform
Infrastructure as code. Define your cloud resources in HCL files, version them in Git, and apply changes with terraform apply. No more clicking through AWS consoles.
5. Nginx
Reverse proxy, load balancer, and static file server. Understanding Nginx configuration is essential for anyone deploying web applications.
6. Prometheus and Grafana
Prometheus collects metrics. Grafana visualizes them. Together they give you dashboards showing request latency, error rates, and resource utilization.
7. kubectl
The Kubernetes CLI. Even if you do not manage clusters, knowing basic kubectl commands helps you debug deployments and read pod logs.
8-10. Essential Utilities
curl for HTTP debugging, jq for JSON processing, and htop for system monitoring round out the toolkit. These are available on virtually every Linux system and solve daily problems fast.
