Cursor vs Windsurf: A Deep Dive Comparison
Cursor and Windsurf are the two leading AI-native IDEs in 2026, both built on VS Code foundations with AI deeply integrated into the editing experience. We used both for a month on production projects to compare them.
Editor Foundation
Cursor is a fork of VS Code that modifies the editor core to support AI features. Windsurf (formerly Codeium's editor) is also VS Code-based but takes a different approach to AI integration. Both support VS Code extensions, themes, and keybindings. If you are coming from VS Code, either one feels immediately familiar.
Multi-File Editing
Cursor Composer mode is the gold standard for multi-file editing. You describe a change in natural language, and it generates a plan showing which files it will modify. You can review the plan, adjust it, and then apply all changes at once. Windsurf Cascade feature offers similar multi-file editing with a conversational interface. In our testing, Cursor was more reliable at large-scale refactors while Windsurf was faster for small, focused changes.
Context Awareness
Both editors index your codebase for semantic search. Cursor uses an explicit indexing step that you trigger, while Windsurf indexes continuously in the background. For large codebases over 100,000 lines, Cursor indexing was more thorough but slower to update. Windsurf incremental approach meant changes were immediately available for context.
Tab Completion
Both offer AI-powered tab completion. Windsurf completion felt more aggressive — it predicted multi-line completions more often and was slightly faster. Cursor was more conservative but had a higher acceptance rate because its suggestions were more often correct. Both significantly outperform GitHub Copilot in completion quality.
Pricing and Models
Cursor offers a free tier with limited completions and a Pro plan at $20/month with unlimited completions and 500 premium model requests. Windsurf pricing is similar with a free tier and Pro at $15/month. Both support bringing your own API keys for models like GPT-4o and Claude. The pricing difference is minor — choose based on workflow preference, not cost.
