Claude Code Tips and Tricks
Claude Code is a terminal-based AI coding assistant that reads your entire project and helps with everything from debugging to architecture. Here are the tips that transform it from a novelty into an indispensable part of your workflow.
Project Context with CLAUDE.md
Create a CLAUDE.md file in your project root with key information: the tech stack, project structure, coding conventions, and common commands. Claude Code reads this file automatically and uses it to generate code that fits your project. Keep it concise — 50-100 lines covering the essentials. Update it as your project evolves.
Custom Slash Commands
Define custom commands in your .claude directory for repetitive tasks. A /review command that runs your test suite and asks Claude to analyze failures. A /deploy command that checks git status, runs linting, and prepares a release. Custom commands turn multi-step workflows into single commands.
Multi-File Editing
Claude Code understands your entire project structure. When making changes that span multiple files — adding a new API endpoint with its route, controller, types, and tests — describe the full change in one prompt. Claude will create or modify all the necessary files in a single pass, ensuring consistency across the changes.
Debugging Workflows
Paste an error message or stack trace and ask Claude to diagnose it. It will read the relevant source files, trace the execution path, and propose a fix. For complex bugs, ask it to add logging statements, reproduce the issue, and then remove the logging after the fix is verified.
The 80/20 Rule
Claude Code is most valuable for the 80% of coding that is routine: CRUD endpoints, form validation, type definitions, migration scripts, test boilerplate, and documentation. Spend your own cognitive energy on the 20% that requires creative problem-solving, architectural decisions, and deep domain knowledge. This division of labor maximizes your productivity.
