We spent three months testing every major AI coding tool on real-world development tasks. Here is what we found.

The Top Performers
Claude Code emerged as the clear leader for complex, multi-file tasks. Its ability to understand project context and make coordinated changes across files was unmatched. The terminal-based interface was initially polarizing among testers but became preferred once teams got used to the workflow. Cursor dominated for in-editor workflows. The tight integration with VS Code, combined with intelligent autocomplete and inline chat, made it the most productive tool for day-to-day coding. The tab-completion feature alone saved our testers significant time. GitHub Copilot remained the most accessible option. Its broad language support and seamless GitHub integration made it the default choice for teams that wanted AI assistance without changing their workflow.Where Tools Fell Short
The biggest gap we found was in long-running tasks. Most tools struggled with projects that required understanding of complex business logic spread across many files. Context window limitations remain a real constraint, though the newest models have largely addressed this for typical codebases.
Testing was another weak spot. While most tools could generate tests, the quality varied dramatically. We saw too many tests that tested implementation details rather than behavior, and mocking was often overly aggressive.
Our Recommendations
For solo developers and small teams, we recommend starting with Cursor for its balance of power and ease of use. For teams working on complex codebases, Claude Code's agentic capabilities make it worth the learning curve. And for organizations that need broad adoption with minimal friction, GitHub Copilot remains the safe choice.
